Ullswater at Dusk

Ullswater is the second largest lake in the Lake District, some 205 feet deep and stretching nearly eight miles through some of Cumbria’s finest landscapes. The village of Glenridding is located at its most southern point and Pooley Bridge at the northern end.

Nearby attractions include Dalemain, with its wonderful stately home and gardens (see Gardens section) – and Aira Force, one of the most famous Lake District waterfalls. It tumbles 70 feet down a rugged hillside with spectacular views of the torrent visible from a stone footbridge perched above the falls. Aira Force and the surrounding countryside is managed by the National Trust.

Visitors to Ullswater can also enjoy cruises on the lake aboard the Ullswater ‘steamers’, which travel between Pooley Bridge, Howtown (mid-lake) and Glenridding.
