Tarn Hows and Ash Tree
This is one of the most popular visitor destinations in the Lake District. Noted for its beauty and accessible walks, Tarn Hows is partly artificial – comprising three small lakes (or tarns) that were joined together in the 19th century. The area was purchased by the famous author Beatrix Potter in 1929, who then - to ensure its preservation - sold the part containing Tarn Hows to the National Trust. The landscape surrounding the lake was later left to the Trust in her will.
