Marbury Church and Mere
Marbury is a tranquil and secluded village, tucked away in the enfolding, leafy countryside of south Cheshire.
Its church of St. Michael (pictured) dates from the 15th century and overlooks the larger of the village’s two meres, or lakes. The church leans at a slight angle due to subsidence, making it one of the most distinctive places of worship in the county. Inside is an octagonal timber pulpit dating from the 1400’s.
The lakes, called ‘Big’ and ‘Little Mere’, were carved out by retreating ice following the end of the last Ice Age – and the village sits on a ridge of land between the two.
Each year in May, villagers turn out for the Marbury Merry Days festival – a traditional country fair aimed at raising funds for the maintenance of the church.
