CHESHIRE

Beeston Castle

Long before work began on Cheshire's Beeston Castle, the rocky crag upon which it stands was the site of Bronze Age settlement and an Iron Age hillfort. The castle was besieged in the English Civil War and was partially destroyed by the victorious Parliamentarians. Today, a walk to the castle's highest point is rewarded with what must be one of the finest panoramas in the country - with views from the Welsh mountains in the west to the Pennines in the east. This is an English Heritage property.
