COUNTRYSIDE
Abbotsbury Swannery
Sheltered by the 17 mile Chesil Beach, Abbotsbury Swannery has been home to a colony of hundreds of mute swans for more than six centuries.
It was founded in 1393 by monks from St. Peter’s Monastery, the ruins of which can be found near Abbotsbury’s parish church. They farmed the birds for meat, but today the swans are an attraction to thousands of visitors, who particularly enjoy seeing the newly hatched cygnets, from mid May to late June.
Close by are Abbotsbury Sub-Tropical Gardens, also well worth a visit.
