Hardy's Cottage, Dorset
This cob and thatch cottage was the birthplace of British poet and novelist Thomas Hardy, in 1840. The surrounding towns, villages and landscapes of Dorset were an inspiration to Hardy and many feature in his work with their names thinly disguised – with Weymouth becoming Budmouth, Dorchester changed to Casterbridge. The author lived at the cottage until he was 34 - and his famous works, 'Under the Greenwood Tree' and 'Far From the Madding Crowd', were written here. Also renowned for its beautiful cottage garden, this is a National Trust property.
Location: Higher Bockhampton, Dorset
