BUILT HERITAGE

Compton Castle

Located down a narrow Devon lane (beware if you are a timid driver), Compton Castle was built in stages between 1340 and 1520. During much of its 600 years this H shaped, fortified manor house has been home to the Gilbert family (who still live in part of the castle). The Gilberts are related to Sir Walter Raleigh - the 16th century writer, explorer and historian – and it is said that Raleigh smoked his first pipe of tobacco at Compton! This National Trust property also boasts a beautiful garden - please see the Gardens section of this website for images.
