GARDENS
Bodnant Gardens - Canal Terrace and Pin Mill
Located above the River Conwy, in North Wales, the garden at Bodnant is amongst the world’s finest. It is divided into two parts. The upper section surrounds a house, which is not open to the public. Here there are terrace gardens, flower borders, lawns and trees as well as a spectacular laburnum arch and swathes of daffodils in the spring. The lower part, called ‘The Dell’ includes a tributary of the Conwy, called the River Hiraethlyn. In this there are waterfalls (one of which is pictured later in this gallery), a wild garden and a Pinetum. Vivid displays of rhododendrons, azaleas and magnolias can be enjoyed here in spring and early summer.
The canal terrace is perhaps one of the most beautiful – and certainly most photographed – parts of the garden.
The canal itself is a long, rectangular pond, in which grow water lilies. Surrounding it is lawn, bordered by grey, blue and purple flowered herbaceous planting. The Pin Mill (pictured) dates from around 1730 and was originally built in Gloucestershire. Rescued from dereliction in 1938, the roof, timbers and some stonework of the structure were incorporated in a new building at Bodnant, which was completed in 1939.
Bodnant Gardens is a National Trust Property.
